The broadcasting of radio in our lifetime has become a part of most of our lives when we’re on the go. Host of ‘Evogue Radio’, Algene De Vos, joins Creative Nation Magazine to share her story as well her experiences about where she started off and being the host of an already booming radio station.
Algene, born in Port Elizabeth, lived with her grandmother until the age of 8 when she then moved to Johannesburg. Growing up, Algene’s surroundings were predominantly women and that drastically contributed to the strong-willed and brave-hearted person she is today. “Love really formed a part of who I am today.”, Algene shares.
Algene’s love for the South African sound as well as her ability to create friendships with music producers Nasty C and A-Recce, made her want to be an active part of it and to push it further so it can gain international recognition. During Algene’s gap year, deeply driven by her passion went on to do promotions and by means of that, she networked and formed contacts with people who had given her the opportunity to be in radio presenting. “Initially...my dream was to get into TV presenting…but when I was given the opportunity, I tried it out. And it was very life changing.”.
Evogue radio is an upcoming urban radio station, owned by media mogul, Valentino, which is heavily focused on the youth in the society. Besides also being a part of Evogue radio, Algene pursued to create an agency along with her close friends called Joe&Jay Agency, which is an agency focused on the filming of music videos. From the birth of Joe&Jay Agency in 2019, The agency has reached new heights and now has been given the opportunity to work with the likes of AKA, Riky Rick and DJ Tira. “Working with these artists…was really a peak moment for the agency…” Algene elaborates. These opportunities allowed her to become more exposed in the entertainment industry, as well as experience new challenges and daunting moments that was definitely a turning point in her perspective.
Algene’s broader view on media itself allowed her to have a more exciting pursuit for the career path. “Watching movies, I’d always be excited because…in my mind I would always envision what I would do differently if I was the director…”, Algene further explains.
Her journey to this point has been one to show bravery as well as resilience to be a “go-getter” and to make do of what you have, as well as always be available and open to new opportunities, as they can serve as stepping-stones to reaching dreams higher than what one’s initial dream. As Algene projects into her future, especially being a part of Evogue radio and further growing her brand, Joe&Jay, she would most likely be honored to be known for her work ethic and her “creative juices” as she describes it.
Projecting back to where her pursuit all began, Algene recalls on how ones life can change in the blink of an eye. However, in the near future, Algene explains that she will definitely play a role in “making the media industry better”, as well as to broaden the spectrum of the inner workings of her agency - branching out in offering her services in the light of acting casting as well as advertisement. The Future really looks bright for Algene, and here at Creative Nation, seeing the rise of new creatives allows our country to have a brand new spark and a fresh new look in what we entail, and in that light, we wish Algene the utmost best of luck!
